This is the right choice for small to medium residential projects, driveways with tight turns or low-hanging trees, backyards with gated access, and projects needing 10-30 yards of material.
Tri-Axle Dump Truck — 16 Cubic Yards
The tri-axle carries 16 cubic yards — 60% more than a tandem — making it the sweet spot for medium to large projects. It weighs approximately 24 tons loaded and is about 28 feet long. Choose a tri-axle for medium to large residential projects (like pool removal), light commercial work, projects needing 16-48 yards, and sites with good access and solid ground to support the weight.
End Dump Trailer — 18 Cubic Yards
End dump trailers carry 18 cubic yards and are the most efficient option for large-volume delivery. The trailer is pulled by a semi-truck, making the total rig approximately 35 feet long. These are ideal for large commercial sites, subdivision grading, road base projects, and any job needing 50+ yards where maximum volume per trip reduces overall cost.
Side Dump Trailer — 18 Cubic Yards
Side dump trailers also carry 18 cubic yards but unload to the side rather than the rear. This makes them excellent for long grading runs where material needs to be spread along a line, roadside work, uneven or sloped terrain, and windrow-style placement. Access Requirements
Before ordering, verify that the truck can physically reach your delivery spot. You need a minimum 12 feet of width for any dump truck, 15 feet of overhead clearance (watch for tree branches and power lines), solid ground that won't sink under truck weight (avoid wet lawns after rain), and space for the truck to raise its bed for dumping (end dumps need about 25 feet of vertical clearance).
